Thanks goes to the university press officer who accidentally set off her rape alarm at the Higher Education External Relations Association conference last week. The red-faced delegate chose her moment well. As she struggled to locate the siren in her handbag, John O'Leary, Times Higher editor, was considering his reply to a tricky question about how closely journalists should work with press officers.
