Bristol University found itself with so many applicants this year that it was able to rise above the annual clearing scramble, indulged in by almost every university except Oxford and Cambridge. This must have come as a relief to vice-chancellor Sir John Kingman. The university senate had decided in principle, against his wishes, to enter clearing in the interests of widening participation.
