Lorna Walker , leader of Arup’s global environmental consultancy and chartered chemist, has been appointed Royal Academy of Engineering visiting professor in engineering design for sustainable development at the University of Sheffield. 

Graham Spittle , IBM vice-president (business integration development) and director of IBM’s Hursley laboratory, has been appointed visiting professor at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Informatics.

Paul McGrath , associate conductor for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (1995-97) and principal guest conductor for English Touring Opera (1996-2001), has been appointed director of music at the University of Warwick Arts Centre.

Paul Myners , former trustee of the Royal Academy and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, has been elected chairman of The Tate trustees.

The Quality Assurance Agency has appointed Sam Younger chairman of the QAA board of directors. He will succeed Christopher Kenyon (who has been chairman since the QAA was established in 1997) this month.

The University of Bradford has appointed Mark Fletcher visiting professor in engineering design for sustainable development. Professor Fletcher is an environmental engineer and associate director of Arup engineering, geology; he is also involved in sustainable water management and flood management research with the government’s Foresight Initiative, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Construction Industry Research and Information Association.
