YOUNG black offenders have suffered tougher treatment from police and judges than their white equivalents, according to research.

A five-year study found they were both more likely to be acquitted in court through lack of police evidence or to be sent to prison if convicted.

Bonny Mhlanga, a research fellow in criminology and criminal justice at Hull University, studied every case in the Metropolitan Police district of Brent involving people under 21.
