Bournemouth University academics and students are part of a team excavating Stonehenge for the first time in over 40 years.

The two-week dig, which is being filmed for the BBC programme Timewatch, is being led by Tim Darvill, head of the university's archaeology and historic environment group. The team wants to find out why stone from Wales was used to build the West Country circle.

Stonehenge will still be open to visitors during the excavation, who will be able to watch the progress of the dig over a webcam in a nearby marquee.

Professor Darvill believes the monument was a centre for healing rather than a place for the dead, as other scholars have argued.
