Sir Harry can take comfort from the news that even Lord Butler of Brockwell, who was plastered over every newspaper last week when he published his controversial report on prewar intelligence about Iraq, has suffered from an identity crisis in the past. Lord Butler, master of University College, Oxford, is apparently very generous with the trappings of his position, even allowing a visiting young German scholar to hold his wedding reception in the master's lodgings. However, on this occasion he learnt that a benefactor is not always accorded due recognition. The proud German parents, who were introduced to "Herr und Frau Butler" during the party, tried to give Lord Butler a tip for the excellent dinner service at the end of the evening.
