Job swaps for the boys: while Tim O'Shea ups sticks from London to take over as principal of Edinburgh University next month, the previous incumbent, Lord Sutherland of Houndwood, is heading south, where he will take on one of Professor O'Shea's old jobs - provost of Gresham College (he was also master of Birkbeck). Gresham is committed to engaging the City in intellectual debate on social and scientific issues through free public lectures. That's all right then - at Edinburgh, Lord Sutherland was not used to charging.
