The news:
- The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) is to hold an open day to showcase the work it does in the fields of science and research.
- A tour around the labs will give visitors an insight into how JRC researchers contribute to community policies which have a direct impact on our daily lives and future. Subjects ranging from food safety and chemical products to public security and antifraud will be showcased on the day.
- Do you know your ‘CO2 footprint’? â€" A 3D game will show you how your personal lifestyle impacts on greenhouse gases and thus on climate.
- Goats with electronic passport on the grass of JRC â€" mad cow disease and other food scandals have shown the necessity to trace the entire life of animals “from farm to fork”. An electronic identification system developed at JRC will be demonstrated on real animals.
- Catch the sunlight to heat your home â€" in the laboratories of the renewable energies unit, solar panels have to undergo severe testing, for example with violent hailstorms, to assess their resistance and performance.
- There will be many special programmes on the day for children, including the study of a special species of earthworm to demonstrate the importance of protecting soil.
