The regulatory framework

The EU has the strictest system in the world for authorising the placing on the market of GMOs. The core of the new regulatory framework is set out in Directive 1 and Regulation (EC) 1829/20032. Regulations governing traceability and labelling of GM products (Regulation (EC) No 3 (and Commission Regulation (EC) No 4) and implementing the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (Regulation (EC) No 5), also adopted via co-decision, have completed the framework.
