General Affairs

The Council adopted a common position on participation by the EU in the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organisation (KEDO) (7229/06). It also adopted a decision approving the conclusion by the Commission of an agreement between Euratom and KEDO.

The objective of the common position is to enable the EU to participate in the process of terminating the light water reactor project as soon as possible and to wind up KEDO in an orderly manner before the end of 2006.

Through its participation in KEDO, since 1996, the EU has contributed to the objective of finding an overall solution to the issue of nuclear proliferation in the Korean peninsula.

The common position is applicable from 1 January 2006 until the termination of KEDO or until 31 December 2006, whichever date occurs earlier.
