Brussels, 06 Oct 2005

Vice President of the European Commission Günter Verheugen and Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik will host a conference on animal tests and alternative methods in Brussels, Belgium, on 7 November.

Speakers will include high-level representatives and experts from industry, animal welfare organisations, academia and national, European, as well as international, institutions.

The objectives of the conference are to demonstrate that the European Union keeps animal welfare high on the political agenda and remains at the forefront of animal protection, and to demonstrate industry's approach to promoting research on alternative methods as well as progress made in the area of alternative methods. It is also hoped that the event will help with identifying further options for improving the development and validation of alternative methods.

The conference will focus on policy issues. It is seen as complementary to the fifth world congress on animal use in life sciences and alternatives, which took place in Berlin from 21 to 25 August and addressed mainly scientific issues.
