As the dust of yesterday's local elections settles, eyes are on whether Andrew Pakes, press officer for the Association of University Teachers, has been elected as a local councillor.

Mr Pakes stood as a Labour Party candidate in the Turkey Street ward of Enfield. The openly gay former president of the National Union of Students perhaps seeks to follow further in the footsteps of Stephen Twigg, who defeated Michael Portillo in May 1997 to become MP for Enfield Southgate.
