Devolution has led to a resurgence of national culture north of the border. But has it gone too far? Allan MacInnes, head of Aberdeen University's history department, has started a Northern European historical research network comprising 18 universities and research institutes. He says: "It has been a breath of fresh air. My involvement in the network has quite simply released me from the egomaniacal cesspit of Scottish history."
