The successor to the research assessment exercise is the subject of fierce debate inside university departments.

Not so outside though. Four fifths of academics have rejected the Government's proposal to replace the RAE with a metrics-based system.

But places remain on a major public policy conference on the RAE's future next Thursday organised by the University and College Union.
