Thomas Stephens’ Literature of the Kymry helped to lay the foundations of modern Welsh learning. It was originally composed as an essay for a cultural competition sponsored by Lady Augusta Hall of Llanover. Stephens’ archive is now held by the National Library of Wales. “The material raises questions as to how apoor chemist’s apprentice was able to become an internationally acclaimed scholar,” explains Marion Löffler. “It highlights the importance of the financial and social patronage of local upper classes for success and social mobility.”
