The National Collegiate Athl-etic Association, which over-sees US intercollegiate sports, has partly backed down over a ban on team nicknames deemed "hostile and abusive" to native Americans. Florida State University, Central Michigan University and the University of Utah are to be allowed to continue to use team names associated with native American tribes but a ban on 15 others, including "Redmen" and "Savages", remains.
