Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for Science and Research, will visit Japan between 11 and 13 April, to discuss a range of issues relating to EU-Japan scientific and technological cooperation. Commissioner Potočnik will have a number of meetings with representatives of the EU and Japanese scientific and business communities. He will also meet Minister of State for Science and Technology, Yasufumi Tanahashi, and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Nariaki Nakayama. Topics for discussion will include the recent Commission proposal for a new Framework Programme for Research, the EU/Japan scientific cooperation agreement and global scientific cooperation, including the ITER fusion reactor project. Japan's success in using knowledge as an engine of growth, with strong emphasis on research and development, makes it an important dialogue partner for the EU, at a time when the Commission is proposing increased support for science and research at European level.
