Former Prime Minister John Major's reputation for greyness was ruined during his recent appearance at Queen Mary, University of London, to talk about his new book on cricket. Sir John was wearing a pair of curious lemon yellow socks. But these were dramatically upstaged by those of the academic tasked with interviewing him. Attlee professor of history Peter Hennessy was sporting bright yellow socks - with blue stripes.
