Andrew Cubie, convener of Scotland's independent inquiry into student finance, is known for his concern that those disadvantaged in early life be given every opportunity to do well later. It has emerged that he has personal experience of second chances. Mr Cubie - one of the first honours law graduates from Edinburgh University, winner of the tax and accounting medals and now a corporate law partner in leading Edinburgh firm Fyfe Ireland - failed his 11-plus.
