Sex and football aside, it is clear that animal-rights extremism has become the story of the summer, with anyone who is anyone rushing to comment. Anyone, that is, except higher education institutions, which have been conspicuous by their silence. When asked for a comment last week, Universities UK was apparently so stumped that they telephoned a leading charitable organisation to borrow a quote.
