Sir Alan Langlands, chief executive of the NHS Executive in England, will become principal of Dundee University. He succeeds Ian Graham-Bryce.

Stephen Grix, principal of Sir George Monoux College, has been appointed head of the Post-Compulsory Education Division at Ofsted. He succeeds David West.

Hugh Mellor, professor of philosophy at the University of Cambridge, has been appointed pro vice-chancellor. He succeeds Quentin Skinner.

Avril Lawrence, former director of development and student services at Havering College of Further and Higher Education, has been appointed vice-principal.

Colin Lucas, whose appointment as vice-chancellor of the University of Oxford is due to end in 2001, is to be proposed to serve for a further three years. The proposal has been made so that he can see through a new structure of governance at Oxford.

Jonathan Hodgkin, from the division of cell biology, Medical Research Council laboratory of molecular biology, Cambridge, has joined the University of Oxford as professor of genetics and takes up a fellowship of Keble College.

Jane Lewis, professor of social policy at the University of Nottingham, has joined as a fellow of St Cross College and Barnett professor of social policy.

Terence Lyons, honorary professor at Edinburgh University and professor of mathematics at Imperial College, has been appointed Wallis professor of mathematics at Oxford and a fellow of St Anne's College. John Broome, professor of philosophy at the University of St Andrews, has been appointed to the White's professorship of moral philosophy at Oxford. He will become a fellow of Corpus Christi College. Stephen Pulman, reader in computational linguistics, University of Cambridge, has been appointed to the professorship of general linguistics at Oxford. He will be a fellow of Somerville College.
