Glasgow University has appointed Bruce Carrington , professor, head of the department of educational studies. He will take up his new post on August 1. He is currently at the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences at Newcastle University.

* Jo Cole , cellist, has been appointed assistant head of the School of Strings at the Royal Northern College of Music. Ms Cole, who will take up the post on September 1, currently holds quartet and composition workshops at Huddersfield University.

* Edinburgh University has appointed Lorraine Waterhouse , professor and head of the School of Social and Political Studies, to the post of vice-principal for equality and diversity from January 2007.

* The University of Central England has appointed Mary Carswell , professor and dean of the faculty of business, computing and law, as pro-vice chancellor (academic). She will assume the post upon the retirement of Phil Walkling later this year. Professor Carswell is dean of the faculty of business, computing and law at Derby University.
