The Diary would like to welcome two new female heads of institution. Ann Tate, pro vice-chancellor for quality and enhancement at the University of Ulster, has been appointed rector of University College Northampton. And Genista McIntosh, executive director of the National Theatre, has been named principal of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Congratulations also to David Gani, chair of organic chemistry at Birmingham University, who will become director of research policy at the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council.
