Congratulations to Manchester University, champions of this year's University Challenge . The team beat Trinity College, Cambridge, by ten points in a nail-biting final with a score of 160. Diary hasn't forgotten how The Times Higher 's University of the Year played in the mid-1970s. Its team, which included David Aaronovitch, now a broadcaster and columnist, protested against the programme's "elitist" nature by answering "Trotsky" or "Lenin" to every question.
