Congratulations to Jon Karn of the Medical Research Council Laboratory for Molecular Biology at Cambridge, who has been appointed chairman of the department of molecular biology and microbiology at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in the United States.

During his 22 years at the MRC lab, Dr Karn has served on the government's Aids steering committee and the MRC's physiological medicine and infections board. His research on the molecular signals that trigger HIV growth led to the discovery of several novel drug targets and the formation of the private biotech company RiboTargets.
