Ian Gibson, chairman of the House of Commons science and technology select committee, was in Edinburgh this week for the launch of the Association of University Teachers Scotland's researcher job-security campaign. Just as he was about to speak, the city's one o'clock gun went off, prompting Dr Gibson to say: "It has not started, has it? Tony, you should have waited."
