Coaxing input from students via text message, as Leeds University's Kevin Linch has done ( The Times Higher , August 31), can have drawbacks. In a letter to The Times Higher , Swansea University's Matt Jones says that his research into the technique reported "unexpected effects". Texts displayed live on a screen behind the lecturer led to "a small number of inappropriate comments as our system did not filter texts, and all texts were anonymous." One wonders what the students might have written.
