The European Commission will launch a wide-ranging public debate on the opportunities and challenges posed by Radio Frequency Identification technology for government, industry and society at large at CeBIT 2006 on 9 March, 2006 (16-18h).

From today's simple radio tags to tomorrow's intelligent and networked systems, RFID applications will create many new opportunities for society and business. However, they also raise questions in the areas of privacy, security, technological reliability and international compatibility.

To address these challenges, the European Commission is organising a high-level Conference on 9th March within the CeBIT Fair (9-15 March, Hanover, Germany). The aim is to take a visionary approach, sketching out possible future scenarios from the perspective of the industry, the provider, the end-user and the consumer.

The debate will be opened by Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society & Media.

The ensuing panel discussion - chaired by Fabio Colasanti (Director General of DG Information Society and Media) - will be composed of high-level speakers, including:

• Vincent Cerf, Google Chief Evangelist & Chairman of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN);
• Claus Heinrich, Member of the Executive Board of SAP AG;
• Malcolm Crompton, former Federal Privacy Commissioner of ߣߣÊÓƵ.
