It may be all the rage to improve links between UK universities and India, but pity the vice-chancellors who risk Delhi belly. Michael Arthur, vice-chancellor of Leeds University, was even refused tablets to treat the likely side-effects before his departure.

He told his university magazine that at a pharmacy in Delhi Airport, just before the flight home, he'd bought the specific antibiotic denied him in Britain. By then he was in desperate need! "I'm pleased to report that I have enough left for more trips to support the growing links between India and Leeds, but don't tell the travel nurse!"
