The first global online networking platform for academics and scientists was launched on 7 March.

Aimed at improving communication across disciplines and across borders between academics, academia-related associations, societies, academic services, students and academic-related business, the Academici platform hopes to overcome so-called 'structural holes'.

'Academici is about networking with academics and researchers across continents and about content, facilitating (free of charge) the exchange of ideas, discussing research findings,' states Markus Vinzent, one of the founders of the platform, from the University of Birmingham in the UK.

In Professor Vinzent's opinion, Academici should thrive where, according to him, Internet portals and websites fail: by virtue of the interaction of and communication between its members.

According to Jonathan Grix, co-founder of 'Academici', the project 'can function as a form of intranet for local, national or international societies by linking all members of a given society with one another on an interactive platform, thereby producing an online community with the potential to generate social capital between members.'
