We are so used to hearing about impoverished universities cutting back and slimming down that it was a shock to hear about Northumbria University's Chrismas largesse. Rumour has it that 2,500 employees - from cleaners to the vice-chancellor - have received a festive bonus of £100. Ho, ho, ho.
