Next month, broadcaster Tim Gardam takes up his role as principal of St Anne's College, Oxford.

The incumbent principal, Dame Ruth Deech, is leaving to become the first independent adjudicator for higher education. Dame Ruth, a graduate of the college, is retiring after 13 years as principal.

In 1979, St Anne's was one of the first women-only colleges to open its doors to men. Today, it is one of the largest Oxford colleges and its population of staff and students is made up of a near-equal mix of men and women.

Mr Gardam will be the first male principal of St Anne's and comes to the college from a distinguished media career.

In the past ten years he has held the posts of head of current affairs for television and radio at the BBC, controller of news and documentaries at Five and, most recently, he was director of television and programmes at Channel 4.

Nigel Bowles, vice-principal of St Anne's, says: "The appointment of Tim Gardam to the post of principal gives St Anne's the opportunity to build on Dame Ruth Deech's distinguished record as a principal while continuing to adhere to the college's values of intellectual excellence and social inclusion."

Mr Gardam says: "To follow Ruth Deech's great achievements as principal will be a tremendous challenge.

"St Anne's represents all that is best about Oxford - it is committed to academic excellence and at the same time is open and engaged with the wider society the university serves."

He adds: "I am extremely proud to have a chance to contribute to St Anne's future."
