Ian Wilmut, head of the Roslin Institute team that created Dolly the sheep, has been appointed to a chair in reproductive science at Edinburgh University.

This is one of two new chairs in the discipline at Edinburgh's £49 million Research Institute for Medical Cell Biology. Professor Wilmut said:

"I'm very pleased to have the opportunity to apply some of my knowledge in a clinical situation."

Richard Anderson , a clinical scientist in Edinburgh's Medical Research Council human reproductive sciences unit, takes up the other new reproductive science chair.

Douglas Cairns has moved from a senior lecturership at Glasgow University to become professor of classics.

Stuart Ralston , former professor of medicine and bone metabolism at Aberdeen University, has become professor of rheumatology.

Jo Shaw , former professor of European law and Jean Monnet Chair at Manchester University, has become Salvesen professor of European institutions.

William Storrar , professor of Christian ethics and practical theology and director of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues, becomes director of Princeton's Center of Theological Inquiry in July.

John Frow , regius professor of rhetoric and English literature, has taken up a chair in English language and literature at Melbourne University.

Sabine Flitsch , professor of protein chemistry, and Nicholas Turner, professor of biological chemistry, are joining the UK Centre of Excellence in Biocatalysis, Biotransformation and Biomanufacturing at Manchester University.
