John Schad will leave Loughborough University to become professor of modern literature at Lancaster University in September.

As the author of a forthcoming experimental book on Jacques Derrida that combines traditional scholarship with fiction, Professor Schad seems a logical choice for the department, which spans English and creative writing.

Books that work with the space between critical and creative writing are growing in number, Professor Schad said. "I think it is partly the huge growth in creative writing across the country that makes those of us on the critical side feel that new things are possible."

He also researches modernism, Victorian writing, literary theory and religion and literature.

The department's strength in many of these areas made it particularly attractive, he said.

Alison Easton , honorary research fellow in English, has taken early retirement to focus on research. She specialises in 19th-century literature and women's writing.

Mike Sanders has moved to Manchester University as a senior lecturer in English literature.
