The new Secretary of State for Education and Skills did not, however, have the opportunity to make a grand entrance to the department to meet her officials. Building work meant Ms Kelly had to make her way through a makeshift side entrance.
One official was heard to quip that a larger revolving door was needed to cope with the fast flow of education secretaries who have passed through the department since 2001.
