Charmo Univerisity was initially established as the Chamchamal subsidiary of the University of Sulaimani, but attained full university status in 2014.
It takes its name from the village of Charmo, to the east of Chamchamal in the Sulaimani governorate.
It has three campuses, the main one located alongside the Sulaimani-Kirkuk Road.
Students are enrolled in three colleges: Education is the largest collee with around half of students taking either Kurdish, English, Arabic, special education or basic science. Kurdish was the first of these sections to offer graduate courses.
Other courses include business administration, accounting and oil, gas and energy management in the Business College, while the Science College offers applied chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, physics, computer science and laboratory science.
