During the period when Malawi was colonised by the British, only a small handful of Malawians were medically trained – the majority of doctors were British. When Malawi achieved independence in 1964, the country struggled to provide medical care for its population.

Campaigns for a Malawian medical school began in the early 1970s, but the College of Medicine was not approved until 1986 – and did not open until September 1991. Its first students had already completed their preclinical studies outside the country.��

Attempts to set up a college of nursing, however, were more successful: the National School of Nursing was commissioned in 1965; 14 years later, it became Kamuzu College of Nursing.��

In 2019, the College of Medicine and the College of Nursing merged to become Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.

Today, the university has six campuses. The main campus is in the suburbs of the city of Blantyre, in southern Malawi; two other campuses are also in Blantyre. There are two campuses in the Malawian capital, Lilongwe, one of which is the primary campus for almost all nursing courses. One further campus is in Mangochi, at the southern tip of Lake Malawi.

Five schools train students in a range of healthcare fields: global and public health; life sciences and allied health professions; nursing; maternal, neonatal and reproductive health; and medicine and oral health. Beyond training doctors, nurses and midwives, the university offers opportunities to study subjects including pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medical laboratory services and nutrition and dietetics.��

It is only able to accommodate roughly half its student body. Priority is given to first-year and foundation students – provided they apply on time. For students who cannot be accommodated on campus, KUHeS provides vetted private-accommodation options.

Students are encouraged to participate in recreation activities. The Blantyre campus provides students with access to a swimming pool, gymnasium and athletics track and field. Students can also play squash, tennis, netball, volleyball and football. The university is in the process of constructing sporting facilities at its other campuses; in the meantime, students are provided with access to off-campus sports clubs.

It also organises multiday intercampus sporting events, during which students are able to access sexual and reproductive health services.��
