Lankaran State University (LSU) was established in 1991 as a branch of Baku State University and became an independent university the following year. Since then, LSU has grown into the leading centre of higher education in the Lankaran-Astara Economic Region, serving students from across the south of the country.

The university is located in Lankaran, a coastal city in southern Azerbaijan, known for its subtropical climate and scenic proximity to the Caspian Sea.
